Pools are closed. You’re not swimming.
Apart from the very most elite, high-performing athletes in the country (who are still in the water)… no one is training.
Or, are they?
I’ve recently discovered that some clubs are offering an enormous amount of dry land workouts, strength and conditioning, yoga, pilates and interval training; sending their kids out running, cycling and skipping, in a desperate attempt to keep some sort of level of fitness, so they are ready for the “return to water”… whenever that might be?!
Ask yourself, can fourteen hours of dry land a week really be beneficial to a swimmer?
We are not insisting that you pound the pavements, lift weights and repeat burpees, push-ups and squats… because you’re a swimmer, and like all great athletes, we will make a great comeback!
Take these two swimmers…
12 years after competing at the 2000 Olympics and retiring in 2003, Anthony Ervin came back to compete at the 2012 Olympics. Despite battling with depression, Tourette syndrome and drug abuse, at the age of 35, he went on to win gold in 50m free at the 2016 Olympics.
Olympian, Florent Manaudou, took two years out of the sport to play handball. He has come out of retirement to swim at the International Swimming League, and is training for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
Outside of the swimming world…
The athletes on this list have been maimed, shot, scorched, stabbed, bombed, banned, crippled, stricken with poverty and stricken with cancer.
